BBC iPlayer on the E71 inc Downloads

April 9th, 2009

Please Note: Since the guide was written, the BBC have added official support for the E71, however you may still follow this guide to view the iplayer on other devices, for example the Nokia E75

If you are in the UK and you own an E71 it is now possible with a little trickery to use the latest 1.6 version of the BBC iPlayer for both streaming TV and Radio and because the E71 has the correct DRM certificates it is also possible to download programmes to your phone for viewing later.

BBC iPlayer 1.6 on the E71

But there is a catch….

The BBC haven’t approved the E71 for the iPlayer service, so if you just install the iPlayer widget you’ll be greeted with a screen like this

BBC iPlayer unsupported

BBC iPlayer unsupported

So how do we get the iPlayer to work?

Simple we trick it into thinking that your E71 is actually a Nokia N96 by changing the user agent of the web browser.

Do achieve this we will need several free tools.

  1. The BBC iPlayer 1.6 Widget
  2. Python 1.45 (It may work with later versions, but I haven’t tested it)
  3. iphonesque_fp1-1.3-UAChange.sis(unsigned)
  4. UserAgentSelect_v1_0_3.sis
  5. A Symbian Certificate to sign iphonesque_fp1-1.3-UAChange.sis
(Follow the guides created by The Moth or Nokia Blog to get your certificate and sign iphonesque_fp1-1.3-UAChange.sis)

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILES – Password is s60mobile

Once you have a certificate…….

  1. Install the BBC iPlayer 1.6 Widget
  2. Install Python 1.45
  3. Sign iphonesque_fp1-1.3-UAChange.sis and install
  4. Install UserAgentSelect_v1_0_3.sis (some people have needed to sign this too, so if it won’t install…sign it first)

Now your ready to start enjoying the iPlayer on the E71, Firstly….

In your ‘Installations’ folder of your E71 your will find the UA Change application, open it and scroll down and select ‘Nokia N96′

Select N96 from the UA Change Application

Select N96 from the UA Change Application

Now open the BBC iPlayer widget, instead of the blank page you saw earlier you will now be greeted by the following screen

BBC iPlayer 1.6 on the Nokia E71 after user agent change

You can now choose your program and stream or download.

Things to remember

  1. Reset your user agent to original when not using the iplayer
  2. The downloads will only work on the E71, as the N95, N82 etc do NOT have the DRM certificates, however Streaming TV and Radio should work fine.
  3. If Streaming set your access point to WIFi in Realplayer (Menu/Tools/Settings/Applications/Realplayer/Streaming/Network)
  4. This will work on The Nokia E71 Firmware 200.21.118 or later, not tested on earlier firmwares.

Thanks to Ratkat for finally getting round to writing his guide, Gerrymoth and The NokiaBlog for the Certificate Guides and Snatcher@symbianfreak for the modded iPhonesque and UA Changer

I have just checked it and it is working fine, let me know if you still have a problem

    @admin

You’ve made a small mistake: pass is “s60mobile” not “s60Mobile” as you’ve written above. :)

So everything is ok. BTW, thanks for post and upload – great job!

    Hi,

Great to hear the solution. I am a great fan of BBC’s programs.
The big question is would it work outside the UK?

I’ve tried several internet apps the stream from BBC website (mainly for media center) and i can’t recieve the video because i don’t reside in the UK…

Can anyone confirm it’s working outside the UK?

    April 14th, 2009 at 09:32 | #9

Sadly the BBC iPlayer only works in the UK, this is a limitation set by the BBC.
You would need to set up a proxy to fool the iPlayer into thinking you have a UK IP address.
I have heard that some radio broadcasts work outside of the UK, but being in the UK I can’t confirm.

You can install directly from the BBC, change the user agent to N96 then on your phone, goto http://bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer

Amazing. I have it working. I am completely new to this sort of thing so thanks for the tutorial. For other complete novices I also had t o sign UserAgentSelect_v1_0_3.sis in order to install.
I am now watching the first episode of the new series of Ashes To Ashes.
Great stuff. Thank you once again.

Oh yeah, the cert took about 9 hours to come in.
Also I had no idea how to sign an app. I got the program to do this from this site: http://www.gosymbian.com/SSIS_download.html.

Installed this on my e71 with the lastest UK firmware (210.21.06), but the downloads are not working, only the streams via wi-fi (which is still better than nothing). When iPlayer is first connecting to the server after it was started, it used GPRS to connect to it. Only once I choose the show to watch it switches to wi-fi automatically. Has any1 got the same thing hapenning on their E71?

when i open the iplayer widget, it only gives me the option of connecting to my home (i.e 3g phone) network, rather than asking which network i would like to cinnect via (no option to choose a wlan network). any ideas how to change this? i have the user set to n96 already. thanks.

Does anyone know if this method would work to run slingplayer mobile?? I don’t have my e71 yet but would be interested to see if this would work if you told the app that the phone was an n95, which is a supported model. Any feedback from someone who has already dealt with the app signing etc would be brilliant

  22. April 27th, 2009 at 16:13 | #22

I just used this tutorial and was suprised that it worked perfectly! The certificates from the chinese website took about 2-3 hours to arrive. I tried another tutorial some 8 months ago…which involved modifying the iplayer program, it contains a file with the list of the phones able to be used…but the newer editions of the iplayer use different coding. Well anyway, im pleased I can watch 2 pints in the palm of my hand -bliss! So long and thanks for all the fish :D

    @lol
Maybe it is connected to the real player settings. Try changing the streaming settings to your 3g provider. This might prompt your phone to ask your choice on start up.

Can anyone please ‘idiots guide’ this whole process for me (and I mean COMPLETE IDIOT!).

I managed to get as far as ’signing’ the application, but I’ve followed all the guides and really don’t understand how to do this (sorry!).

I’ve got a ‘certificate’ from that Chinese looking website, but I’m afraid I don’t know what to do now.

Do I have to do this all on my pc, on my phone … or with my phone plugged in via USB to my computer?

    May 4th, 2009 at 08:55 | #27

On your computer goto http://thenokiablog.com/2009/04/05/how-to-get-certificate-to-sign-and-install-unsigned-s60-apps/ and install the program from step 7

Using this program, sign both the iPhonesque and User Agent with the certificate you got, once signed transfer all 4 programs to your phone and install them, (I usually transfer them via bluetooth and install direct from phone rather than using PC Suite)

Working for me, both streaming and downloading on E71 with stock 3UK branded 100.07.76 firmware.

I didn’t need to sign UserAgentSelect_v1_0_3.sis though I did need go to App_Manager->Options->Settings and set “Software installation” to “All” to get it to install.

I’ve found I can stream and download over a 3G connection too, I have the unlimited data plan so this is OK for me, but could otherwise be very (very) expensive.

I’ve set the realplayer access point to a smartconnect group so it will use wifi when I’m at home and 3G elsewhere without me needing to switch manually.

One other point – with my phone (i.e firmware 100.01.76) the only way to install iplayer16.wgz is using the phone file manager after copying the file to the phone memory card.

Double clicking iplayer16.wgz on the PC to install via Nokia PC suite did not work.

BBC iPlayer is now directly available from the BBC iPlayer website, for Nokia E71 in the UK, without any of the workarounds or certificates etc listed above.

    Thanks,
Bit of a grind certifying the app for a noob like me but got there in the end. Absoloutly brilliant with the iPlayer on E75 and also let me fool 3UK into allowing me to download Skype on an “unsupported handset” using the user agent as n96.
